After Hearing: Join the Health Freedom Rising Rally
The California Senate Health Committee has granted an informational hearing on California’s school vaccine medical exemption policies.
Families and physicians have raised concerns about how California’s medical exemption process works in practice. We want lawmakers to examine what the state’s data can tell us and where important information is missing.
Can families find a physician willing to evaluate their child? Does the prospect of state review or professional scrutiny make physicians reluctant to evaluate children or issue exemptions?
Are medically complex children receiving individualized consideration? How does the current process account for each child’s medical history and circumstances?
What happens when a child can no longer attend school? Do children lose access to educational programs or services? Do parents have to reduce their hours, leave their jobs, or take on new caregiving costs? Does California track what happens to these families?
What Does an Informational Hearing Actually Do?
An informational hearing gives lawmakers a public forum to hear testimony, examine evidence, and ask questions. It gives them the opportunity to do the following.
- Hear from families, physicians, and others affected by existing policy.
- Examine evidence and state data.
- Question witnesses and state agency officials.
- Identify gaps in the data and examine potential unintended consequences.
- Build a public legislative record.
That record can help lawmakers decide whether to consider changes to state law, regulations, or the way the medical exemption process is administered.
What the Hearing Does Not Do
The hearing itself does not change California law. Any changes to the medical exemption process would require separate action. The hearing gives lawmakers a chance to establish the facts before deciding whether to pursue legislation or other changes.
